In the photograph all temporal difference is excluded, all moments are simultaneous within the image. That moment immortalised in actuality never passed.

This is the sea off Dongfudao in the Dongji island group, the most easterly inhabited islands in China.
In this area, on 1 October 1942 the Lisbon Maru, a Japanese ship returning to Japan carrying British POWs, was torpedoed and sunk by the American submarine USS Grouper.
Of the 2000 prisoner's aboard some 800 died. Fisherman from the islands rescued many others.

The photograph, haunted by the world: presence of a past state suggested in the present. It tells that the world is there, but at a remove, no longer immediate.
